'The Long Ride Home'

On 9th November, twenty-six-year-old Cass Gilbert, from Blandford Forum, Dorset, completes a cycling marathon - he arrived back in the UK, two years to the day since he left Sydney, Australia. He has ridden 25,000km and he has raised - 22,738 - nearly 1 for every kilometer, all in support of Children With AIDS Charity. Contributors include George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Nancy Sinatra, Mariella Frostrop and the Cameron Macintosh Foundation.

After travelling through 20 countries, Cass says: "I have slept in cockroach infested backpacker hotels, camped out in deserts and jungles and been the guest of a High Commission and an Embassy." He goes on : "The main highlight was the gruelling ride, cycling across the Himalayas from Lhasa to Kathmandu." A photograph of him at the Everest base camp appears on his website 'The Long Ride Home' http://www.cyclesydneylondon.com The trip brought him many new friends from across the world including fellow cyclists of all nations - pictures on his website.

Through the sponsorship of Psion and Ericsson, he was able to email articles for publication in Cycling Plus and the Rough Guides as well as sending material back for his website. Other sponsors include the Michelin Tyres, Garmin Global Positioning System, RoughGuides, Peters, Fraser and Dunlop, Wheelie Serious Bikes, who provided him with spares during his trip, Security Despatch who transported them, Terra Nova and HSBC Select for insurance.

Public school educated - St Paul's and Bryanston - with a modern language degree from Manchester University, Cass taught French to gain travelling money and worked as a cycle courier for Security Despatch in London to get fit. His main interests other than cycling, include music, cinema and photography. He also enjoys scuba diving, paragliding and swimming. What does he want to do now? He says: " I'm looking forward to a family Christmas, catching up with friends, giving some lectures and maybe writing a book."

Donations to his chosen charity CWAC will provides holidays for HIV/AIDS infected children and should be sent to one of the addresses below - cheques made out to Children With AIDS Charity endorsed with CASS SYDNEY TO LONDON on the back of the cheque. Alternatively there is a direct link to the charity from Cass' website, www.cyclesydneylondon.com to make credit card donations.

A lot of interest has been shown by the media. On Cass' return he was interviewed by HTV News and is featured on Channel 4's TransWorld Sport, due for transmission in January 2000. The program is shown in 84 countries. The Daily Express has picked up the story with a full page article. Nineteen magazine are doing a piece, as well as .Net Magazine. Local radio and newspapers have featured him. Interest is picking up daily.
